Governor Robe introduced a religious grant, paid by the government, to churches in 1846. The Act can be read here, but here is an extract:

Whereas for the advancement of the Christian Religion, and the promotion of good morals in South Australia, it is expedient to encourage the observance of public worship. and for this purpose to authorise the issue from the Public Revenue of the said Province of sums to be applied in aid of the building of churches and chapels for Christian Worship, and of the maintenance of ministers of religion."
